Some important facts of Jean Piaget’s theory –

(1) Adaptation

According to Piaget, children have an innate tendency to adjust with their environment. This tendency of the child is called adaptation. According to Piaget, the child begins to adapt from his early life. When a child is exposed to any stimulating situation in the environment, at that time his various mental activities work together and acquire knowledge, not doing separate tasks. This action always goes on at the mental level. The relationship that man has with the environment is influenced by the organization internally while adaptation externally. Piaget considered the process of adaptation to be more important.

Piaget divided the whole process of adaptation into two sub-processes.

  1. Assimilations
  2. Accommodation

(1) Assimilation is a process in which the child uses previously learned plans or mental processes to solve a problem. It is a biological process.

(2) Accommodation is a process that is done only for adjustment when the previously learned plan or mental processes do not work. Piaget says that the child strikes a balance between the processes of assimilation and reconciliation. When a child is faced with a new problem, a cognitive imbalance arises in him. To remove that imbalance, he initiates the process of assimilation or adjustment or both.

Cognitive structure: According to Piaget, cognitive structure refers to the mental organization of the child. That is, the various activities involved in the intellect such as perception, memory, thinking and reasoning, etc., all of them work in concert. Engaging with the environment is the result of the organization itself.

Mental operation: The thinking done by the child to solve the problem is called mental operation.

Schemes: This would have been an expression of the thinking done by the child to solve the problem. That is, the manifestation of mental operations is schemas.

Schema: A mental structure that can be generalized is a schema.
